Workshop on Sensor Industry Grand Challenges and Standards
The sensors industry has been evolving for over 100 years. It contains thousands of sensors for a myriad of parameters. But it is by and large made up of analog sensors for point solutions that are not scalable to the burgeoning IOT world and the artificial intelligence revolution. The sensor industry faces a number of “Grand Challenges” that hold it back from increased performance, lower size and power, IOT scalability and adoption of AI. These Grand Challenges are problems that are 1) too difficult; 2) too time-consuming; or 3) too expensive for a single company to solve.
The IEEE Sensors Council, through its Industry Liaison Committee (ILC), has launched an initiative to explore these Industry Grand Challenges. We seek to define them, develop roadmaps for their solution, develop standards for interoperability, and ultimately provide resources to build partnerships for their solution.
This workshop at SENSORS 2026 is the ILC’s inaugural workshop to explore Sensor Industry Grand Challenges. We will show some of the work that the ILC has done to date and then attendees will break out into topic area groups to develop ideas further. We will also discuss the importance of developing Standards.
